Sinusitis in Children

Sinusitis is an infection or inflammation of the sinuses, and it can occur in people of any age. Children can suffer from sinusitis, and it is generally categorized in four ways: acute sinusitis, subacute sinusitis, recurrent sinusitis, chronic sinusitis.

The causes of sinusitis in children are much the same as sinusitis in adults. A sinus infection occurs after an upper respiratory infection or a common cold. The infection causes inflammation of the nasal passages that can block the opening of the sinuses and result in a sinus infection. Allergies are also common causes of sinusitis because of the swelling in the nasal tissue and increased mucus production. An infection occurs when the flow of secretions from the sinuses is blocked and bacteria begin to grow.

The four types of sinusitis:

  • Acute – Symptoms lass less than four weeks and get better with antibiotics or other appropriate treatment.
  • Subacute – The symptoms do not initially respond well to regular treatment, often requiring multiple doses of stronger antibiotics. The symptoms last from four to twelve weeks.
  • Recurrent – Sinus infections occur four or more times a year. These recurrent infections can be either acute or subacute.
  • Chronic – Any chronic illness is categorized as one that re-occurs multiple times within 12 months, symptoms last longer than four weeks, and it is resistant to treatment. Chronic sinusitis fits all of these categories.

With chronic sinusitis, the symptoms never really go away for long periods of time. With recurrent sinusitis, symptoms will subside for periods of time, yet sufferers will have four or more bouts of sinusitis within a single year.

Sinusitis in children is a concern, and parents need to bring the issue up with their doctor. The child’s nose needs to be examined to determine the cause of this issue. A sample of the mucus from your child’s nose may show what germ is causing the infection, which can help your doctor provide appropriate treatment. Even if your child’s symptoms go away on their own, it is vital to bring the matter of recurring sinus issues to your doctor’s attention.
